Why Your Planche Looks Different From Someone Else’s

Correct Planche Form Isn’t Always Going to Look Identical

One of the easiest ways to confuse yourself in calisthenics is by comparing your planche to someone else’s.

You see an athlete with:

  • perfectly straight lines

  • a different shoulder angle

  • a different amount of lean

  • a more “aesthetic” position

and immediately think:

“My form must be wrong.”

Not necessarily.

There are universal principles that make a planche a planche.

But there are also individual differences caused by:

  • arm length

  • torso length

  • leg length

  • body mass distribution

  • shoulder structure

  • mobility

  • technique

That means two athletes can both perform a technically valid planche...

and still look noticeably different.

The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s exact shape.

The goal is to understand what parts of the position are non-negotiable...

and what parts are simply individual.

Your Body Changes the Mechanics

A planche is fundamentally a leverage problem.

Your hands are the base.

Your body extends horizontally behind them.

The farther your center of mass sits from your hands...

the harder your shoulders and upper body have to work to keep you suspended.

That’s why body proportions matter so much.

Two athletes can have the same strength level...

but very different mechanical demands.

Longer Arms Can Change the Position

Arm length affects how your body interacts with the floor.

Longer arms can sometimes create more clearance and change the geometry of the movement.

But they can also change:

  • shoulder position

  • lean angle

  • how far the hips sit from the hands

  • how the athlete distributes force through the floor

A shorter-armed athlete may appear to lean differently even if both athletes are producing the same basic planche mechanics.

This doesn't automatically make one position better.

It means they're working with different structures.

Torso Length Matters Too

A longer torso moves more body mass farther away from your hands.

That increases the leverage demand.

A shorter torso can make the position mechanically more favorable.

This is one reason some athletes appear to progress faster even when training quality is similar.

Their body proportions may simply make the skill less demanding.

That doesn't mean they aren't strong.

And it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.

It means your planche has to solve a different mechanical problem.

Your Legs Can Make a Big Difference

Leg length and mass distribution also matter.

Longer legs place more mass farther away from your hands.

That increases the torque your shoulders have to overcome.

The same is true if you naturally carry more muscle mass through your lower body.

This is why two athletes at the same bodyweight can experience completely different difficulty levels.

Where that bodyweight is distributed matters.

A 160-pound athlete with relatively short legs may have a different planche experience than a 160-pound athlete with long, muscular legs.

Same scale weight.

Different leverage.

There Are Still Non-Negotiables

Individual variation does not mean anything goes.

A technically sound planche still requires key principles.

You generally want:

  • straight elbows

  • strong scapular protraction

  • active shoulder positioning

  • full-body tension

  • controlled pelvic position

  • a body line that stays horizontal

Those are functional requirements.

They're not simply aesthetic preferences.

If one of those breaks down...

you may actually be compensating.

Straight Arms Matter

This is one of the clearest examples.

A planche is a straight-arm strength skill.

If your elbows are bending significantly...

you're changing the movement.

You're shifting more of the demand into the muscles that flex and extend the elbow.

That doesn't mean every elbow will look visually identical.

But the principle remains:

the arms should be locked.

Scapular Protraction Matters

Your shoulder blades should actively push away from your spine.

That creates the stable upper-body position required for the skill.

Without enough protraction...

you may collapse through the shoulders.

That often makes the position weaker and less stable.

Again...

different athletes will look slightly different.

But the function is the same.

You're actively creating a strong shoulder platform.

The Amount of Lean Can Look Different

This is one of the biggest sources of confusion.

Athlete A may appear to lean dramatically forward.

Athlete B may look more stacked.

Does Athlete A have better form?

Not necessarily.

The amount of visible lean depends partly on:

  • body proportions

  • hand position

  • torso length

  • center of mass

What matters is whether the athlete has shifted their center of mass far enough forward to counterbalance the body behind them.

The exact visual angle can differ.

The mechanical requirement doesn't.

Aesthetic Form and Functional Form Aren't Always the Same

Social media has created an obsession with making every skill look identical.

But there's a difference between:

technically correct

and

aesthetically preferred.

Some athletes may prefer:

  • a more perfectly straight line

  • pointed toes

  • a specific head position

  • a particular hip position

Those details can absolutely improve how the skill looks.

But they aren't always what determines whether the movement is mechanically valid.

Don't confuse style with function.

Your Head Position May Vary

Some athletes look slightly forward.

Others keep the neck more neutral.

Head position can influence:

  • balance

  • proprioception

  • comfort

  • visual orientation

There are better and worse ways to use head position...

but there's also individual preference.

As long as your head isn't causing the rest of your body to collapse...

small differences aren't necessarily a problem.

Body Awareness Helps You Find Your Position

This is where body awareness becomes critical.

You need to learn how your own body feels when it's correctly positioned.

Not how somebody else's planche looks.

Advanced athletes can feel when:

  • their hips rise

  • their shoulders lose protraction

  • their elbows soften

  • their weight shifts backward

That internal feedback allows them to make corrections without constantly staring at a video.

Video Still Matters

That doesn't mean you should ignore visual feedback.

Video is one of the best tools for planche training.

Use it to compare:

  • elbow position

  • shoulder position

  • hip height

  • scapular control

  • body line

But compare yourself to your own technical standards...

not just someone else's physique and proportions.

Video should help you identify errors.

Not convince you that your body needs to look exactly like theirs.

Your Hidden Limiter May Not Be Technique

Sometimes athletes spend months obsessing over form...

when the real problem is strength.

Or mobility.

Or wrist tolerance.

Or scapular control.

That's why it's important to distinguish between:

a technical error

and

a physical limitation.

If your position keeps breaking down in the exact same way...

there may be a weak link preventing you from holding the correct shape.

Stop Copying Elite Athletes Blindly

Elite athletes are useful references.

But they're not templates.

Their:

  • limb lengths

  • bodyweight

  • shoulder structure

  • training history

may be completely different from yours.

Copy the principles.

Not necessarily the exact shape.

That's a much smarter way to learn.

The Bigger Picture

The best planche for you is the one that respects the mechanics of the skill...

while fitting your individual structure.

You still need:

  • straight arms

  • strong protraction

  • full-body tension

  • enough forward lean

  • control

But don't panic if your planche doesn't look identical to someone else's.

Different bodies produce slightly different expressions of the same movement.

That's normal.

Final Thought

Correct technique matters.

But identical technique doesn't exist.

Your planche is influenced by:

  • your proportions

  • your mass distribution

  • your mobility

  • your strength

  • your structure

The goal isn't to make your body look like someone else's.

The goal is to make your own position as strong, efficient, and controlled as possible.

Learn the universal principles.

Understand your own mechanics.

Then build the strongest version of the skill your body can produce.
